I should point out that at the end of 2000, I was still working full time as a Civil Servant, and despite having worked on my websites for 4 months had yet to receive a single penny in commisson from any network.
Resolution Number One: Finally make some money from the websites. Success. I received my very first cheque in April 2001, from Affiliate Window, for the grand sum of £13.51. I didn’t know whether to cash it or frame it!
Resolution Number Two: Get Married. Success. Er Indoors and I tied the knot on 7th April 2001, and we’ve been happily married ever since – She’s been happy and I’ve been married.. boom! boom! Seriously though, we’re really happy, and glad we took the plunge.
Resolution Number Three: Give up smoking (maybe). Success, but late. I didn’t really want to give up at the time, and carried on for a number of years, before finally smoking my last cigarette on 12th April 2006. Since then, I’ve not smoked over 12,000 cigarettes, saving me more than £3,000. Oh, and I can run for the bus without getting out of breath!
Resolution Number Four: Lose Weight. Success (partial). I did manage to lose a little weight, but ended up putting it all back on when I gave up smoking and became a full time affiliate. I’m getting back down to where I want to be, but am still a little way off. Will be something to work on in 2008.
Resolution Number Five: Make a Million. Success (late and technically). Whilst said tongue in cheek at the time, I have earned in excess of £1,000,000 in the last 6 years. Unfortunately I haven’t kept hold of all of it, hence why I’m still working!
Resolution Number Six: Get promoted. Failure (which ultimately lead to the success of Number 5). It says a lot that one of my main (realistic) objectives at the start of 2001 was to get promotion so that I could earn £16,000 a year rather than £12,000. And if I hadn’t been turned down for promotion in the summer of 2001, I might still be there now, which is a very scary thought. Being turned down for promotion was the catalyst that resulted in me quitting my job by the end of the year to become a full time affiliate.
Resolution Number Seven: Lern to Spel. Failure. Regular readers of this blog will know that the odd spelling mistake always makes its way through. I am careful about spellings, but also tend to type very quickly, which leads to a few typos.
Resolution Number Eight: Get a Dog. Success, but late. My first dog Max, a liver-and-white Springer Spaniel was born on New Years Day 2002, and was joined by Jinx, a fellow springer in 2006. Unfortunately Max was killed in a collision with a car in November of this year. He would have been six tomorrow.
Resolution Number Nine: Get another tattoo. Success, but late. I had my first tattoo done a few days before making these resolutions, and despite always wanting another one, could never find the right one. I finally made a concerted effort to get one done for my thirtieth birthday this year, and had my second tattoo, a tribal band on my right arm inked in October.
Resolution Number Ten: See Newcastle play live. Success. This will need some explaining, as most people know I am an Argyle fan, however I also have an affection for Newcastle United, dating back to my youth. My Dad is a Manchester United fan, and I was determined not to be railroaded into supporting them, so decided to cheer on their rivals, who were Newcastle at the time. I finally saw a game at St James Park, courtesy of Mal, Paul and Steve from buy.at in August 2003, watching a thrilling 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich.
I certainly never thought I’d fulfill so many of those resolutions, although to be fair I think I had no idea the huge change in direction my life was about to take in becoming a full time affiliate. Here’s to the next six years!
