Close Protection - 100,000 words a month is a huge amount - Obviously I don't write it all myself as I outsource a lot of the content-writing. I still chip in with a few thousand words a week, and I'm chuffed that the quality of the content we publish is top-notch.

i don't know about programs to crawl a website to count words - I guess they probably do exist. There are loads of word counter tools out there that you can paste your content into to perform a word count - You can even put it on your own server/site if you wish. Here's the one we use (http://www.javascriptkit.com/script/script2/countwords.shtml).

Lee - Yup, missed a trick with the Palin image lol.

Lee/Gadget - It is definitely the long road to riches - The hardest part is the first 3/4 months where you're doing nothing but add content and seeing little or no return, compared to PPC when you can see sales coming in literally 5 minutes later. However, a year or two down the line, there'll be no looking back (especially as the PPC affiliates get squeezed more and more)

And as you quite rightly point out, it's really satisfying to create your own content - Look at Kirsty's post above - She's put a hell of a lot of work into that site and can quite rightly be really proud of her work. And even better, she's already seeing some results in a competitive area - How much would that traffic cost her on PPC?

And of course, it answers the buzz question of 2008: "Does it add value?" - A resounding YES!

I agree. I think there's a blog post on the evolution of an affiliate marketeer too. Most, if not all, affiliates want a quick win when they first start and as they slowly start to understand affiliate marketing more and more they realise that if they want to do this stuff long term then they need to lay foundations, plant seeds (& other cliches) to reap the rewards later on.

Yes this can include PPC and there are a lot of (very) successful people doing just that. But my preference is to write good, relevant content that gets indexed and feel satisfied I've contributed to the internet experience in a positive way and not just added to the negative side of it.

And no Michael Palin picture in your "full circle" bit - shame on you.

I completely agree. About 2 years ago I started writing unique content and working on affiliate blogs as a route to getting sales. I also started my reduction in PPC as I saw the ways things are were going.

It still takes a year to get anywhere with a fresh site - but it can be worth it. I implore every affiliate to become a wordsmith - its actually quite satisfying writing your own content.
