Why is it then that when asked to point to Plymouth on a map, around 50% will point somewhere near Southampton, and many people who work and live in London refuse to believe anywhere exists in the UK outside of the M25 corridor?
Anyway, onto the point of this rant post: Those lovely guys at buy.at have announced that they will be touring the country in the buy.at Roadshow. Now whether they’ll have Bruno Brookes and Smiley Miley looking after things, I don’t know, but they are asking affiliates to vote on where the roadshow will visit.
Currently leading the way with over 20% of the votes is London. What is the point of that? Not only were buy.at (and every other network, and affiliate, and merchant, and affiliate and..) in London just last week for a4uexpo (and two weeks previous for Affiliate Summit.. and Ad Tech, and SES, and…), but they’ve got offices there too – Surely the point of the roadshows is for buy.at to visit those people who otherwise can’t get to them – Not those who can’t be bothered to travel more than 2 miles? Even when buy.at ran the (in theory) great promotion to “bring buy.at to you”, the winning “town” was London!
In second place is Birmingham, which I think is a great choice: Very central, and easy to get to from everywhere (well, except the south West of England of course!). For those of us in Devon or Cornwall, we have always had to travel hundreds of miles to go to ANY affiliate event (It was a 400 mile round trip for a4uexpo, and at the end of the month, I’ll be doing the 816 mile return journey to attend the buy.at Christmas Cracker. The shortest journey we’ve ever had to an affiliate event was the two hour, 130 mile trip to Bristol. Good job I don’t live at Lands End, else that would have been a 210 mile trip – each way.
Buy.at will be visiting nine cities on their roadshow, and I’m hoping that people will make sure that Plymouth is on the final nine – Not only will it mean that the affiliates, agencies and merchants of the South West don’t have to travel hundreds of miles just once in their lives, but for those who fancy it, Plymouth is a hell of a great place to visit.
As well the mighty Plymouth Argyle, there’s some wonderful coastlines here, and some brilliant waterside cafes, bars and restaurants. you could even visit Cap’n Jaspers for a Half Yarder (half a yard of baguette, sausages and cheese) or if you’re really hungry a Jasperizer (erm, burger, bacon, egg, cheese, sausage, and loads more).
You could stroll along the Hoe (pictured above) and ask why the hell we’ve got a lighthouse on the land. We’ll even teach you how to talk proper janner like we does. Oh, and it’ll stop me going on about how everyone thinks the UK ends at Bristol – So vote Plymouth now, and come join us next year at the buy.at roadshow.
p.s. Who voted for buy.at to travel all the way to Newcastle? Must be a couple of buy.at members of staff who get travel sick lol…

When I saw the headline I though you were on about the Green Army!
Agree though it is nice to have events outside of London – its just unfortunate that that is where most of the advertisers base themselves.
I personally think that London and Newcastle should be disqualified from the voting!
