In no particular order…

To Matt and the Existem/a4uexpo team – For putting on another top notch a4uexpo. I know how stressful the few days are for you guys (especially around 9am on Day 1 when the printers died just as everyone arrived en mass expecting delegate badges.. not to mention the power cut!)

To ExCel itself – The new venue is much improved on the old Platinum Suite of previous years – lighter, brighter, more spacious, and not as tired looking. There was ample space to mill around and chill on the comfy sofas between sessions.

To Mark and the Existem AM crew – For keeping me fed and watered (ok.. stella’d) for the last couple of days. The EAM Loft was the place to be for the after-party (and pre-party) experience, with Beer, Pizza, Beer, All-day Breakfasts and Beer on the menu (did I mention beer?)

To Karl and Ben from Conversion Rate Experts – For two fantastic sessions that gave me pages of notes, tips and ideas to improve my sites performance. I was really hoping that they would have had enough time to critique one of my sites that is in desperate need of improvement in their “conversion clinic” session – however it seemed that 20 other people had the same idea, and sadly their allotted time ran out long before they got to <del datetime="2010-10-14T12:03:57+00:00">laugh at</del>, erm I mean <del datetime="2010-10-14T12:03:57+00:00">slag off</del>, err critique my efforts

To Affilinet – For kindly sponsoring my a4uexpo ticket, providing me with regular coffee hits, and persuading me to bite the bullet and take part in a panel session.. which leads me to…

To everyone who attended both my panel sessions – I mentioned last week my fear of public speaking, and was amazed to find that the nerves didn’t really appear until the session actually got underway (I probably thought I could always back out at any point up till then! Whilst listening to my fellow panellists Kirsty and Nick making their points (and trying desperately to think of something insightful, useful or just desperately trying to avoid making an arse of myself), I felt sick with nerves, but eventually settled, and having looked at a photo taken from the audience, I actually look like I’m enjoying it!

I’ll probably do a panel session again, as long as it’s a fun subject that I’m comfortable with (I felt that the “Role of the networks and Industry Bodies in shaping the user experience” session I did later in the day was a little above my paygrade, but I think I bluffed my way through it.. just!

To Dan @ CJ – For persuading me to do said session.. Even though I found it tough going, it was worthwhile pushing myself outside of my comfort zone, and got me thinking about some in-depth matters and gave me a good insight to the “other side” of AM.

To Webgains – for the speed networking event, which was fun. but very tiring.. oh, and for the iPad that I’m sure you’re about to tell me I won in the raffle

To the FOUR guys from Mattress Man – who thought it would be a good idea to ALL take part in the speed networking, denying other merchants (at least 3) slots and flooding what was otherwise a good event.

To the guy at the speed networking.. - Who said “I tried selling retail products as an affiliate but struggled to make any money. Now I make a fortune, writing eBooks about how to make money online” – That’s the best laugh I’ve had in a while!

To Affiliate Future – For Rum ‘O’ Clock – now an institution at expo.

To the networks, merchants etc that are going to send me prizes (especially iPads!) – in advance of course.. I made sure I entered EVERY stand competition this year – I am determined to get an iPad!

To whoever had the idea of ordering a cup of tea at 2am on the last night – After mucho Stella, Guinness and Champagne, a good old cup of tea really hit the spot!

And last, but by no means least..

To everyone else I’ve forgotten to mention - I blame the alcohol for making my memory somewhat hazy!

Who would YOU like to thank?

It’s going to be a very different experience for me this year, not only as I’ll be attending on my own for the first time (It was difficult to justify the cost of bringing a colleague this year), nor because many of my affiliate buddies have opted to give it a miss this year, making it a less social event for me than in previous years.

No, the main thing that’s going to be different for me is the fact that I’ve agreed to sit on two panel sessions this year, having previously declared that there’s no way in hell you’d get me up on stage with a microphone in my hand. I suffer from awful stage fright you see, and have a massive fear of public speaking. However the nice people at Affilinet pitched the idea of a panel session to me that seemed to be along the lines of the “modcast” that a few of us did with Fraser back in 2007 – just some affiliate buddies chewing the fat about the topics of the day. That didn’t seem like too much pressure, so I agreed to my first ever session, at a4uexpo (or anywhere else for that matter!).

I’m pleased to be on the panel alongside fellow affiliates Kirsty and Nick and withPaul from Affilinet making up the non-affiliate bods and keeping us in check, it should be a fun session – even if it is at lunchtime, so expect a lot of munching and nom nom nom’ing during proceedings!

I then managed to get roped into doing a much heavier session, entitled “Role of Networks or Industry Bodies in Shaping the User Experience”. Whilst a much heavier topic, it’s something that I feel passionate about, and it’s still only a panel session, so I’m having to overcome the nerves twice in one day – I will be in desperate need of a drink by the end of those two sessions, so might head over to AF’s stand to see if Rum ‘O’ Clock has kicked off yet

I’ll also be taking part in the “speed networking” event at the end of Day 1, getting the chance to say “what’s your name and where do you come from?” to 25 merchants, and hopefully without managing to bore people stupid about Easy Content Units and Link Builder.. (well if I do bore you.. at least it’s only for 2 minutes.. think about the poor people who will have sat through an hour long session with me earlier in the day!)

If you’re going to expo and want to say hi, meet up or (always a popular choice) buy me a beer, then the easiest way is to stalk me on Twitter.

I stumbled across GeoffBlog’s review, and agreed with pretty much every word of it, so rather than post the same things, I thought I’d just link to the post (maybe I could do a session next year on entitled “How to be a very tired, still-slightly-hungover and thoroughly lazy blogger”) instead, and bullet point the main things that stood out for me:

The food was much, much improved on previous years – Chilli, Pizza, Nachos, Curry, Fish and Chips. Spot on, and no hungry affiliates this year!

The sessions weren’t that great – if you’d been to the previous 2 expos, you’d pretty much seen the same content a couple of times! not sure what you can do about that though – There’s only so many ways you can skin the “how to rank on Google better” cat, and I can’t think of a session that I’d like to see next year off the top of my head – Perhaps next year I’ll leave the sessions to the newbies and just do the networking.

The o2 club was really, really disappointing – the o2 itself is pretty stunning visually, and a really cool place. The club wasn’t – it was dark, dingy and uninviting. The promised “quiet area for networking” didn’t happen, so you couldn’t hear a word anyone was saying, and they kept running out of beer! we’d had enough after about an hour so grabbed a couple of taxis back to the Novotel where a brilliant, chilled relaxed evening was had. We weren’t the only ones either, as more and more taxis full of affiliates kept arriving as word got out, and there must have been 60 or 70 affiliates there by midnight!

The networking to be had was top quality. For an affiliate that’s based nearly 200 miles from London, it’s not often I can get to chat face-to-face with networks, merchants and other affiliates. a4uexpo gets them all in the same place for a couple of days, meaning I get to chat with almost everyone (apologies to those I didn’t have time to speak with – I’ll catch you next year!)

The Twitter wall was a brilliant addition, and kept me entertained throughout – it was useful to see where the good sessions were, what others were doing, or for the daily announcement of “Rum O’ Clock” by the AF team

Forcing affiliates to fend for themselves food-wise on the middle night was a good idea I think, as we had the opportunity to go off somewhere with affiliate buddies and have a good chat/laugh over a brilliant meal – again not something we can do very easily at any other time of the year – Many thanks also to Clarke at Paid on Results for footing the bill for the “all you can eat meat fest” – more Chicken Hearts anyone?

As usual, I’m so, so tired after the event – It’s a mental couple of days, which has huge impact on our Industry as a whole – You leave full of ideas, contacts and deals, but top of the “to-do list” for me right now is to catch up on some sleep (and I managed to have around twice as much sleep as last year!)

Roll on a4uexpo 2010!

So that time is very nearly upon us again when the great and the good in Affiliate Marketing descend upon London Village for three nights and two full days of networking, education, and maybe a tiny bit of drinking until 5am.

As a veteran of the previous two expos, I thought I’d share some essential tips with you to ensure you make the most of a4uexpo 2009..

Pack the right equipment..
Essential items to survive a three-night, two-day conference include a decent supply of Paracetamol, ProPlus and business cards. I wouldn’t worry too much about paper or pens, as they are usually provided for you within the delegate pack, and if not, there’s bound to be a promotional pen or twenty lying around that you can lay your hands on.

It’s worth remembering that you’re out on a limb somewhat at ExCel, so it might be an idea to take some snacks and drinks with you (you can always leave them in your hotel room) – Food and drink is provided at regular intervals throughout expo, but when you’re starving hungry and fighting 300 other hungry people for tiny bowls of salad as they arrive 10 at a time, you’ll be thankful you nibbled on a cereal bar a few hours earlier

Prepare Properly..
There’s no reason whatsoever to wander around ExCel aimlessly looking for people you might want to speak with – The a4uexpo team have provided a complete list of all the exhibitors, sessions and attendees, so you can plan exactly who you want to speak to, what sessions you’re going to, and whose stands you’re going to visit. You’ll get much more out of the conference this way, and avoid sitting through boring sessions and speaking to hundreds of irrelevant people.

The “appointment” system of the last couple of expos appears to have been dropped (looking at last years, it wasn’t that greatly used), so there might be a small wait to speak to people on the more popular stands. We’re not exhibiting ourselves, but if you fancy a chat with me or Jason about Easy Content Units or anything else we do, the best thing to do is drop me a line via Twitter (@lammo77), as I’ll be tweeting live from expo.

Don’t be afraid to speak up..
If you’re in a session, and don’t understand a point being made, don’t be afraid to ask a question – You’ll probably find that ten other people are thinking the same but are too nervous to put their hand up. The speakers love questions too – It’s much easier to answer a question than it is to think of something interesting to say yourself!

On a similar note, don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to other attendees – affiliates are (mostly) a pretty friendly bunch.. There’s no cliques here, and most affiliates get one really well and are happy to chat with anyone, regardless of how long they’ve been an affiliate or how successful they are deemed to be. Come and say hello – we don’t bite!

Pace yourself..
I will not be naming names, but a certain person who works at an agency caused much amusement last year on the middle night, being completely unable to co-ordinate his hand in order to pick up the drink that was in front of him – The look of sheer frustration and confusion on his face was priceless. Then there’s the network employee who fell asleep on the final night – his colleagues had abandoned him and he had to be put in a cab and sent on his way. Or the handful of people who seem to throw up in the toilets every year…

Yes, it’s a free bar – everyone does tend to like a drink at these events, but if you’re getting this wasted, then you’re not going to be doing much business are you? And isn’t that why you’re going to expo?

Send me to bed..
This is my first expo since Little Lammo was born, and I’m determined to make the most of the event. For me there’s an added bonus this year – the opportunity to have a good 6 or 7 hours uninterrupted sleep for three nights!

I’m therefore imploring anyone who sees me in the hotel bar anytime after 1am to please send me to my bed, rather than letting me chew the fat until 5am every night like I did last year!

Any other tips you’ve got to share?

I’m writing this at 11pm on Thursday evening, having had an average of just three hours sleep a night for the past four nights, so please excuse any random spelling mistakes (well, any more than usual), because I simply have to put on record my thoughts on the 2008 A4U Expo before they become a distant memory (as demonstrated perfectly here).

No-one knew what to expect from the first event last year, but this time, the expectation level was much higher – The standard was set, and we certainly weren’t disappointed – I’ve certainly come away with the “feel-good factor”, loads of notes, ideas and freebies. Was it as good as 2007? I’d certainly say it was, and I didn’t think that would be possible.

Sessions
I blogged a few weeks ago that I was really looking forward to the sessions this year, and I have to say that on the whole they were so useful and relevant to me – I’ve come away with even more notes than last year, and some fantastic tips and tricks that I can put into practice right now to start repaying the investment in attending expo. I’m going to pick out three key sessions that really stood out head and shoulders above the rest for me:

The very first session I attended was Joost de Valk’s WordPress Optimisation session, and despite the first thing I wrote down being “download entire presentation from Joost’s site”, I still proceeded to fill another page and a half with extra ideas and tweaks that will help make WordPress even better than it is now. Everyone was really blown away by this session, and all you could hear from affiliates as they came out of the room was “wow”, “oh my god” and “that’s dynamite” (and that was just me!) The techniques and tools that featured in this session will be the very first thing I’ll be working on post-expo, and I’ve no doubt will pay for the cost of attending many, many times over.

I wasn’t sure whether to attend the Affiliate Doctors Live session, as knowing that affiliates are generally very coy and reluctant to give out their URLs publicly, this had the potential to be a very hit-or-miss affair. After a brief silence though, we were off and running, with the panel of Marcus Tandler, Dave Naylor and Chris Garrett being joined by Joost once again after Bob Rains went AWOL. Again, I walked out with massive amounts of notes, tips, tricks and ideas to help every single one of our sites do better in the SERPS. And Kudos to the guy from Clothing for being brave and putting his neck on the chopping block – The feedback he received is going to be of massive benefit I’m sure – Personally I’d have loved to have put one or two of my sites up for <s>ripping to shreads</s> constructive feedback from the board (When are you ever going to have the chance to have four guys of that quality give you a free consultation?), but I’m far too chicken. Cluck!

Finally, I really enjoyed <s>Ricky from the Kaiser Chiefs</s> Al Carlton’s session “Million Dollar Blogging Strategies” – This was standing room only, and a really enjoyable session – The presentation itself was pretty cool, but it was in the more relaxed, unprepared Q&A session that Al really came into his own, and as someone who’s spent the whole of the last year starting to build up a network of blogs, I found Al’s example really inspirational, and hope to be half as successful in a couple of years time (especially if Al receives his $30m asking price) – I’m only sorry I had to turn down Al’s offer to join him in scouring London for a late-night drinking den at 4:30am this morning, but I was completely drained by that point!

Networking/Partying
I seem to have brought home a load more freebies this year, and a huge wad of business cards, and I reckon we’ve done a lot more networking than last year – A little longer between sessions helped with that, but with some sessions overrunning, it was still a tight squeeze – We skipped a couple of sessions to allow time to cruise the stands, but still didn’t get round to see everybody. It’d be nice if the exhibition stayed open a little longer after the sessions finished (say till 7pm or so), but I don’t know whether that would work logistically, or whether I’m just going to have to miss another session or two next year.

The cruise down the Thames was stunning – London at night really is an amazing backdrop, and it’s great to see the charity auction raised a huge amount of money. There were issues with the catering on the boat, and a lot of hungry affiliates by the end of the night, but Matt came right to the rescue by laying on loads of bowls of chips for everyone once we had our sea legs back on dry land. Day Two clashed with the England v Belarus World Cup qualifier – Not a problem though, as those nice guys at Sky laid on a VIP Party for us where we could watch the game (which was of course live on Setanta, not Sky sports lol) whilst quaffing champagne with Chris Kamara and Matt Le Tissier, which certainly made Jason’s day!

With heading to bed at gone 4am every night and breakfast at 9am every morning, perhaps Matt and the team should consider approaching ProPlus for some sponsorship money next year, as I doubt I’d have made it through the event without them!

The Future
In 2009, a4uexpo splits off into the third annual London event (again at ExCel, on the 14th and 15th October 2009), but also for the first time the team will be taking the a4uexpo brand into Europe with an Affiliate Marketing conference in Amsterdam on the 28th and 29th April 2009. I’m not sure whether I’ll make it to the Amsterdam event (No doubt my arm will be twisted once I see the sessions and the exhibitor list), but you’d have to physically restrain me to stop me going to a4uexpo London in 2009 – If you didn’t go this year, then you missed out big time – don’t make the same mistake next year!

Now please, please please… Can I go to bed?

I’m just about to pack for a4uexpo before heading to London Village tomorrow morning for three days of networking and education that will completely exhaust me. Having stocked up on Pro Plus and Paracetamol, I’d ready to take it on! Several people have already asked me about meeting up at some point over the week, and whilst I don’t want to be tied down to a strict timetable (I aim to “wander” a lot more than I did last year), there are a few places you will be certain to find me over the next 4 days:

Monday October 13th:
10:45am: On a train to London.
14:00pm: Somewhere on the London Underground.
15:00pm: Checking into the Custom House Hotel
19:00pm The Ignite Party, Novotel. Find me by the bar, or outside with the smokers (even though I don’t smoke anymore)

Tuesday October 14th:
11:00am: At the WordPress SEO/Optimisation session. This is probably THE session I’m looking forward to the most, and the one I feel can have the biggest impact on my business.
14:00pm: At the “So You Don’t do Travel” session.
17:30pm: Possibly a brief appearance at the Retail & Telecoms Networking Reception, before getting changed for the..
19:30pm: Cruising down the Thames on the Buy.at cruise (assuming I remember to pick up a ticket from the Platform A stand.
23:30pm until far-too-late-considering-there’s-sessions-early-the-next-day: Back at the Novotel bar.

Wednesday October 15th:
09:00am: Heading straight for the DGM stand, as Jess and Cat will be making fruit smoothies, which sorted my hangover right out on Day Two last year!
09:30am: At the SEO & PPC Tools uncovered session. Loaded with ProPlus, feeling the benefits of a DGM smoothie and probably on my second bottle of water by now.
12:30pm: At the Million Dollar Blogging Strategies for Affiliates session. Should be good for picking up a few tips.
17:00pm: At the Travel Networking Reception. As a converted Travel Affiliate (well I will be when I make my first travel sale!), I’d better meet my fellow movers and shakers in the Travel sector.
18:00pm onwards: At the Ice Party, The Fox, watching England struggle their way to a 2-0 win over Belarus.
From when the Fox kick us out until I drop: Back at the Novotel bar.

Thursday October 16th:
Morning: trying to sleep off the mother of all hangovers.
Afternoon: On a train back to Plymouth.
Evening: Sleeping.

Friday October 17th:
All Day: Sleeping. Recovering. Planning!

So there you go stalkers – A timetable of my movements for the following week.. seriously though, if anyone wants to chat, just come up and say hi – I won’t bite (you could even bring me a beer if you like!).

A huge thanks to everyone who entered the competition to win an affiliate pass to a4uexpo, plus 3 nights accommodation in the Novotel, courtesy of those lovely people at Sunshine Holidays – We had over 70 entries at the close of play, and due to the fantastic response to the competition, Chris and the boys at Sunshine have kindly agreed to put up some more prizes, so we’ve got another full affiliate pass to give away, and two networking passes!

So without further ado.. let’s see who the winners are…

First Prize - A full Affiliate pass to A4uexpo, plus 3 nights in the Novotel goes to Tom Armstrong, who is based in Sunderland. he’s been in affilliate marketing for about 10 years now and has sites in lots of different areas, including downloadable products, software and hard goods. He has always promoted international services and products but in the last few years he’s been looking to do more UK affiliate products. He’s working on a number of datafeed sites at the moment. He works at affiliate marketing full time but this is the first event he’s been to. His wife is also an affiliate and works in Travel.

Tom says: “Wow that’s amazing. I’m absolutely over the moon. I think this is the first thing I’ve ever won. Thanks again John and I look forward to meeting you at the Expo! You’ve made my week!”

Second Prize – A full affiliate pass to a4uexpo goes to Martin Warn. Known as “purple” on the a4uforum, he’s been an affiliate for as long as I can remember. I forgot to ask him for a bio or picture when I told him he’d won last night, so I’m just lifting stuff from his facebook page… Martin is a member of the “If I am ever worth over 10million I’ll make Worcester City FC a league club”, “I Was At The First Ever Roof Gardens Affiliate Get2Gether” and “I did not go to Barbados with Affiliate Future” groups.
I’ve been speaking to several affiliates over the last couple of weeks who are weighing up the benefits of going to a4uexpo next month, and despite my best assurances, it remains a considerable expense for a newbie (both in terms of money and time away from the Day Job) to risk, and it’s all too easy to say “I’ll go next year instead”. Back in June, I blogged about how I was attending a4uexpo for £210 (including travel and hotel) – well now I’m proud to be able to offer one lucky affiliate the chance to attend for free, courtesy of our friends over at sunshine.co.uk.

Yup, it’s the kings of the affiliate incentive once again – They’ve already given away laptops, holidays, chocolate and passes to the affiliate event of the year (of which yours truly was a lucky winner). and all of sunshine’s incentives have had one common theme – They’re all really, really easy to enter: Put a link up, Put a banner up, Put a deeplink up, etc, etc. So I thought I’d follow the same path, and make this comp as easy to enter as possible: No tiebreakers, no begging letters, no “make x sales” or “write reviews for us” here: Just answer one simple question correctly, and you’re in the draw to win!

The Prize
One affiliate pass to a4uexpo 2008, worth £299+vat
Three nights accomodation at the Novotel Hotel (right next door to Excel, and the venue of choice for late night “networking” last year)

The Question
Chris and Alan from Sunshine will be launching their “Top secret Project” (I’ve had a play with the alpha version, and it looks very, very good) on Day One of expo, with their session “So you don’t do Travel?”, a recent addition to the sessions lineup, and yet another one to add to the “unmissable” list.

The Question is: what time is the “So you don’t do Travel” session? You might just find a clue to this question here

The Entry Form
SORRY, COMPETITION NOW CLOSED

The Terms
As it’s an affiliate pass, this comp is only open to affiliates.
You’ll have to make your own way to London – This comp is for the expo pass and 3 nights hotel stay
Lammo’s decision is final, no purchase necessary, I can’t enter, one entry per person, and all the usual competition gubbins.
Closing Date for entries will be midnight on 6th October.

Finally… Fancy doubling your chances of winning?
Head over to Kirsty’s blog then, where she’s also giving away an expo ticket and 3 night hotel stay, also thanks to those very, very nice people at sunshine.

Good Luck Everyone!

I was speaking to someone the other day who asked if I’d be attending any affiliate events in the near future. My reply was: “Nah, a4uexpo next month will be the next one for me.. Hang on.. next month??? Bloomin ‘eck, that crept up on us!” And we’re not about to forget either, as we’re fed a daily update via the never tedious (cough) “xx Days to go” countdown that seems to have started already.
