B&Q Affiliate Program

The B&Q Affiliate Program is on Affiliate Window, and pays 3% commission across most products. On their program page, there is mention of tiered commissions of up to 5% being available, but I was unable to view details of that, so if you are able to drive large columes of sales their way, you may want to ask your account manager whether increased commissions are available.

The B & Q Affiliate program covers the 6,000 or so products that are stocked and can be bought via the website (diy.com), but also enables users to browse more than 35,000 items that can be picked up in store at the users’ nearest B&Q store.

It is worth noting that on these types of sale (where users reserve an item to collect in store), a sales commission is not paid, and you will instead receive a £2 CPA payment. It would appear that there are also items that do not even pay a CPA on reserve and collect items, so it really is worth doing your research before promoting a product to check you’re going to get paid for selling it!

There is now a seperate program (called B&Q Next Day) which has more than 12,000 items available for next day delivery, and offers free delivery on all orders over £50. The commission rates are the same as the main B and Q affiliate program (3 to 5% depending on volume of sales) – This site is linked to from the diy.com homepage, so it is important you join this program too.

Toys R Us Affiliate Program

The Toys R Us Affiliate Program is on Affiliate Window, and pays 3% commission across most products. It is important to note that they do not pay commission on any games consoles or games bundles that contain consoles.

Toys R Us are famous worldwide for their huge range of products that span a wide range of ages – They stock everything from Barbie Dolls and Ben 10 to drum kits, bouncy castles and sandpits. If you have a site that in any way targets children (or more specifically their parents/guardians/credit card holders!), then you really need to feature Toys R Us on your site.

Information supplied to us about the Toys R Us Affiliate program indicates that the average conversion rate on the website is around 2.5%. However, they also tell us that over the Christmas period, the conversion rate leaps up to the 9% mark! They also tell us that the average basket size is over £90, and they offer free delivery to the customer if they spend more than £150, so they are doing all they can to keep the basket value nice and high.

One down side for the ToysRus affiliate program is their Pay per Click policy – No PPC is permitted at all. There’s even a rather heavy handed warning for would-be PPC affiliates that “Any affiliate found to be driving traffic from the PPC channel will be immediately suspended from the campaign and commissions will be declined” – consider yourself warned!

The Sainsburys Affiliate Program is on Affiliate Window, and pays up to £5 CPA and 5% commission. There are currently three different Sainsbury affiliate programs:

Sainsbury’s Groceries
This program pays £5 CPA for every new customer who purchases grocery items. At the time of launch, the program would not track non-grocery sales (which attract commission via a seperate program.. details below) and therefore you should be careful to target the traffic you send and ensure that you use the correct program in order to receive the correct commissions.

It is important to note that ALL grocery sales will track, and will be validated on a monthly basis, meaning that you will see a lot of reversals for existing customers at the end of the month – something to take into account if you’re working out costs for PPC etc!

Sainsburys Groceries Affiliate Program Vital Stats*

Sainsburys Non Grocery
This is currently a seperate progam, although affiliates will be pleased to know that the ultimate intention is to merge this program with the grocery program so that both grocery and non-grocery products will track, at which point the program will become a hybrid of CPA and % depending on the items purchased.

The non-grocery program pays up to 5% commission, depending on the item purchased. Items from the Technology department only attract 2% commission, whilst those promoting Sport and Leisure products will enjoy the full 5% commissions.

Commission is NOT paid on sales of gift vouchers.

Sainsburys Kitchen Appliances Affiliate Program
Appliance are tracked via a third seperate program, and I believe will continue to be a stand-alone program once the other two programs merge. The commission on the Kitchen Appliances program is tiered according to the level of sales driven by affiliates.

It is important to note that at the time of writing, Sainsbury Kitchen Appliances were not accepting any voucher code sites into their affiliate program.

You may have happened to see around 39,000,000 search results in Google for “bingo”. There’s no denying that it’s big business, but for someone advertising in retail or finance, you may be forgiven for wondering how you’re going to go about promoting it well.

The best place to start is to simply realise that bingo visitors are consumers. They are looking for value, for reputable brands, and for good service. If you can gear your bingo affiliate promotions towards this, then your visitors will begin to reward you. In general, to make your bingo promotions really work, you need to be providing regularly-updated copy that will not only be cached in Google, but will also be cached in the hearts and minds of your readers. Banners alone don’t work, but you will have learned this anyway from your other promotions!

So, how do you start your bingo review? Begin by reading around what other people are saying about the site, then pick out three of the best reviews you have seen. What is it that makes the review text work? You’ll probably find that it provides the bingo community with information about the jackpot sizes, the ticket prices, the size and popularity of the chat rooms and – ultimately – what their bonuses are like. If a bingo player has the chance of a large jackpot for a small ticket price, then there’s an obvious appeal. Similarly, if the bingo player can have a big bonus (like Jackpotjoy’s 100% cash match bonus), then they will soon be motivated to give the site a go.

Reviews can work well if you run banners alongside them that remind the visitor of the main attractions of the site in question. If you review is mainly geared towards the great bonus offers, then make a point of choose a banner that explains the bonuses. Similarly, if your review deals with huge jackpot sizes, then run a ticker banner showing the latest amounts to be won. (Market-ace has these for larger progressives in Deal or No Deal and Full House Bingo games at Jackpotjoy). Usually, an offer-led banner, giving up to date information will do the trick of really focusing your visitors’ attention.

If all of this sounds like common sense to you, that’s because it is. Promoting bingo services is actually no different from retail or finance verticals in terms of the nuts and bolts of how to run the promotions. You will find, though, that certain tools work better for your site than others. There’s no immediate rule of thumb for working out what these are, except subtle comparisons with your other traffic. If you successfully run ads about credit services, then it might be case that advertising bingo bonuses is the more suitable approach. If you are doing well with cashback promotions, then why not try a bonus code that your visitor can redeem upon signing up?

It’s impossible to escape the grim finance articles online. Credit crunch this, recession that! There are so many articles which list ways to save a few quid that you would think we’d all have piggy banks crammed with cash by now.

Still, real people are trying to save money and that is worrying some affiliates who are looking for ‘recession proof’ products. A few readers have commented on products which we might have thought were luxuries in the past but are now considered essentials (think Satellite TV and similar services.)

Mobile phones are one of these products. In surveys, most people say they couldn’t live without their mobile phone, yet mobiles can offer some good commissions to savvy Affiliates. So, with that in mind let’s take a look at the top networks and what they’re offering us right now.

3 Mobile
The company which seems to be offering us the most at first glance is 3 Mobile. However, they are being a little bit cheeky. Their Affiliate Marketing spiel offers us a direct program with no ‘Network Middleman’ and boasts ‘up to £125 per net sale.’ But ‘net sale’ means that if your customer buys everything 3 would like them to, you’ll get that amount. More likely however, a customer will opt for less and could even choose a pay-as-you go handset. With 3, you’ll get just £5 per pay-as-you-go handset sale. Take a good look at what mobile networks are offering both customers and affiliates before you decide which mobile phone network to push the hardest.

Orange
Orange run their affiliate program through DGM and Buy.at and they offer great big commissions of £60 for every new customer who orders a pay monthly contract. That’s unusually high for the industry. Every new customer who orders a pay monthly Sim Card (on its own) earns the Affiliate £20. Again there’s just £5 commission paid on pay-as-you-go handset sales. If you think outside the box and also sell Orange Mobile Broadband you can earn £70 per sale! This lot could really add up.

O2
O2 are excellent in terms of their transparency. They seem honest and to the point. When you visit their affiliate site they tell you exactly what you stand to earn right off the bat. If you make 1 to 10 sales, you’ll earn £40 for each one. Make between 11 and 30 sales and you’ll earn £48 for each and if you make over 51 sales per month you’ll earn £56 for each sale. They give you the option of using the Buy.at Network or Commission Junction, too. These guys are definitely up there with Orange.

T-Mobile
T-Mobile are offering a simple and unimpressive £16 commission per contract, T-Mobile run their affiliate program through the Buy.at network and their marketing material hints that the higher your volume of sales the more you earn. But they don’t offer any specifics. They seem to want people to sign up before they tell them how much they can really earn.

Vodafone
Vodafone have definitely put a lot of thought into their commission structure. Like O2 you’ll get higher bonuses on bigger sale volumes and commissions start at £17 for a phone contract application. They’re pushing their broadband offering too and as such, you’ll get £45 for every Mobile Broadband Application. ‘Sim Only’ mobile contract applications earn you £45 too. Then, if you push some extras, you’ll earn between £1 and £5 for accessories and pay-as-you-go handsets. Vodafone use the Affiliate Window and DGM Networks.

Virgin
I’m not sure that Virgin is keeping up with the competition because they only offer 5% commission on sales. When you do the math that doesn’t add up to much. They run their affiliate services through Tradedoubler. Their marketing material is very positive about their offering and it says that with: “5% commissions – on a phone worth £219.99, you could earn £11.” But really this pales in comparison to some of the competitors offers. They might benefit from an Affiliate restructure? They’re the only mobile phone company in the same league as these other guys who have percentage-based commission.

BT Mobile
Finally, BT Mobile is willing to give us £27 per application on high volume sales and £21 commission on low ones. This is reasonable but not as great as the £60 from Orange! They’re with the Affili.net Network.

A Few Thoughts
It’s worth looking at the products. This is really important because a good product deal will always sell better than a less competitive one. Avoid a false economy by making sure you invest plenty of energy in promoting the best deals, rather than just pushing the product with the highest headline commission earnings. Weigh up the customer’s benefits with your own and you’ll end up making the best choices.

Credit Cards are one of the areas which are often targeted by ambitious affiliates – but do take care. They can be a lot of hard work because there is SO much competition out there. That’s not the only problem either: as long ago as 2005 cards by Accucard, Lloyds TSB and Goldfish (which has now been bought by Barclays) all had their affiliate programs pulled from the market. M&S’s More Than card, CitiBank’s cards and other credit cards soon followed. A year earlier still, Barclays had pulled all their cards from affiliate programs too!

This has made running affiliate websites for UK cards substantially harder but there are far more products worth promoting for clients across the pond. However, if you want to stick to UK cards and focus on this market some UK credit card companies are still interested in you. Various MBNA cards are looking to get some promotion and some good pre-pay cards are still looking for affiliates too. Then there are Virgin credit cards and Vanquis who aim their products at people who need to build positive credit ratings.

Vanquis
Vanquis charge customers a huge amount of interest but they justify this by saying that the amounts they lend are low and that their purpose is to build a better credit rating, not for splurging on purchases. They also point out that their customers are of a ‘higher risk’ than many other borrowers and that the interest fees they charge reflect that. Their program is available through Affiliate Window.

MBNA
There is a long list of cards which you can promote with MBNA, there’s the MBNA Business Card, and then there are cards associated with football clubs such as Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, West Ham, Aston Villa and Tottenham. They also produce the Breakthrough Breast Cancer card, National Trust Credit Card and some other specialist products. Several of the bank’s charity cards are available on the Buy.at Network. Affiliates who promote their WWF, National Trust, British Heart Foundation or Breast Cancer Breakthrough cards get £8.50 per customer application.

Virgin
Virgin offers £10 per submitted application for a Virgin Credit Card and it’s worth noting that the Virgin card is actually also an MBNA product. The network running this program is OMG and this card currently has the longest interest free period on the market which could mean that with the right marketing content this card could sell itself.

Pre-pays
Pre-pay cards are more popular than ever because they are especially useful when travelling, like a credit card you can use them anywhere, but unlike a credit card your bank won’t detect imaginary ‘fraud’ and freeze your account when you’re halfway through a tequila session in Mexico. So, what cards are worth promoting?

FairFX are top of the moneysupermarket.com pre-paid card lists because they charge no monthly fees and only reasonable withdrawal fees from bank cash machines. There are also no additional charges for using them too, unlike with other pre-paid cards. You could make £7.50 per customer application with FairFX. Their cards come in US or Euro formats but they can be used anywhere in the world in any currency and the funds are simply transferred into the correct (local) currency at the time of purchase or withdrawal. You can join their affiliate program through the affiliate network Profitistic.

Splash pre-paid is another popular pre-paid card and ran by Maestro, with this card you can earn £5 per application and you can join their affiliate program through Affiliate Window or Webgains. There are a number of other pre-paid cards out there which offer affiliates similar deals.

Specialist Networks
There are also a number of specialist networks out there which are eager to sign you up to their selection of credit card affiliate programs. Many of them also offer to help you make websites – which some people might consider lazy, risky from an SEO perspective or unethical but its an option for those intimidated by the initial site build process. Other credit card affiliate networks will even offer you content too. How you use these networks is up to you but you might consider that you can see what companies they’re promoting and go directly to that company yourself.

In some cases this will make a big difference in the commission you receive as it will have nothing ‘skimmed’ off by your specialist ‘network.’ Cardoffers.com provides plenty of resources to credit card affiliates free of charge, so does Cardcommission.com. Prepaidcardaffiliate.com is similar too but you’ll find more UK pre-paid credit card info on there.

Checking out what the price comparators and high profile finance sites are saying about given cards and trying to track down an affiliate program for them might be a good route in to finding desirable credit cards. It’ll also give you chance to check out the competition which is essential!

With Sun Bingo and News of The World, if you sign up 1 – 25 players a month you’ll earn £25 per person and then a 25% share on their revenue for the lifetime of their play. If you sign up 76 players or more you’ll be entitled to earn £35 per person and a 35% share for the same period.

For Jackpotjoy! There’s a slight difference because you’ll only receive commission on players who play with real money – not just for fun. There’s a scale here too, – earn up to 45% for the lifetime of the player, or as little as 30% for 1 – 25 commissions per month. You’ll also get £30 per acquisition.

Gala Bingo
Gala Bingo is one of the industry leaders and has a strong advertising campaign featuring Sharon Osborne. They also run their affiliate scheme through Trade Doubler and they offer Affiliates the choice of a £20 bounty or a 35% revenue share for the life of their referred customers.

Foxy Bingo
Foxy Bingo is another online Bingo company that is making waves in the industry and poses serious competition for the other industry leaders. They have a large fan base and offer competitive sign up bonuses for new customers. They run their affiliate program through the Buy.at and Affiliate Future Networks.

Littlewoods Bingo
Littlewoods Bingo also runs their affiliate program through Buy.at and Affiliate Future. They offer new affiliates a free keyboard and mouse, £10 free to play their games and £25 for every new depositing customer. Alternatively, you can choose to forgo the £25 bonus for a 25% commission on the profits from each player you introduce.

Mecca Bingo
Mecca is a well-known name in Bingo with Bingo Halls up and down the UK. They run their affiliate program using Trade Doubler and they offer affiliates bonuses for acquiring customers on both their Bingo and Gaming brands but also offer 35% commission for however long your introduced player plays with them.

Ladbrokes Bingo
Similarly, Ladbrokes uses Trade Doubler and offers affiliates a 35% revenue share and some bonuses although the website’s marketing material doesn’t describe these.

888Ladies Bingo
888Ladies Bingo has merged its affiliate program with Littlewoods under the name www.uffliliates.com they offer several different ways to earn a commission which include a percentage share like some other schemes, an agreed amount for each referral or a combination of these things described as ‘hybrid’ and only available by special request.

Mirror Bingo
Mirror Bingo is owned and ran by Cashcade who actually own a string of Bingo and soft gaming websites. They appear dependent of networks and some people on forums have had technical problems with their system but it’s hoped these will be ironed out in the coming year.

Smaller Bingo Websites
Some smaller websites are tapping the growing market; these include Bingo Bongo (on Affiliate Future, as well as an independent program) Wink Bingo, Dream Bingo and Think Bingo Cosy. Wink and Dream Bingo respectively are quickly gaining popularity due to their big new player incentives and reward point systems. Wink also runs their affiliate program independently. They offer affiliates 40% on player lifetime profit and they are also working on some affiliate incentives too.

Dream Bingo also runs their own CPA affiliate program but WagerShare are believed to be working on taking them on soon. As for Think Bingo Cosy, they too are running their own Affiliate program and can be contacted about this through their website.

Whichever programmes you opt for, do remember that affiliate and indeed operator competition for the main search terms is intense. You will need to carefully consider all of the elements of the online marketing mix including SEO, social media and PPC in order to work out a meaningful plan to grab a slice of the action.

But the action is enormous!
