Green Army marching onwards (and maybe upwards)

This will be my last update before heading off for V Festival, so expect me to return next week caked in mud and half-deaf, courtesy of The Killers, Foo Fighters, Snow Patrol and others – I will aim to report back on all of it that I remember!

I’ve now been blogging for three months, and in all that time, there’s only been 1 post related to the mighty greens, Plymouth Argyle. OK, you could argue that it was close season, and we didn’t actually play any games or sign anyone we didn’t already have on loan, but still.. it’s a bit of a poor show, so to make up for it I’ll trumpet a few reasons why it really is good to be green at the moment.

1. We’re on a bit of a run. We’ve actually won our last seven competitive games in a row. If only this season had started 5 games into last season, we’d be sitting top of the table now!

2. We have some money in the bank. Unlike certain other clubs, we haven’t borrowed millions of pounds to finance pathetic attempts at getting into the Premiership/Champions League, and hence we don’t collapse in a crumpled heap when it all goes tits up.

3. Everyone underestimates us. Teams/Chairmen/fans expect to beat “the likes of Plymouth”, so when we turn up with a half decent, well organised team that actually gives them a game, it isn’t long before the fans turn against their own team, thus making our job a little easier!

4. We love our manager. Ian Holloway is a total legend. Pretty much anyone in football will tell you that. And as a manager, I do not believe there is a better motivator of players out there. His teams play attractive, attacking football, and there is never a dull moment – Not something Man City fans will be able to say this season (or the back end of last season either!)

5. We have low expectations. That might not sound like a positive, but it means the team themselves can concentrate on playing good football, and slowly march towards the play-offs without the weight of the fan’s expectation on their shoulders. I’d rather have that than a team who sacks their manager and changes half the team if they finish outside the Top 6.

6. We now appear to be a “cup team”. Having reached the quarter finals of the FA Cup last year (where we were cruelly knocked out 1-0 at home to Watford despite throwing everything we had at them), we’re now in the second round of the Carling Cup (where we have been drawn to play Doncaster at home) for the second time on three years. That might not sound like much of an achievement to most fans, but as Argyle fans will know, cup progress for us is rare, particularly in the league cup, where until recently, we had gone 13 years without getting past the first round!

7. Our fans aren’t “plastic”. With a few exceptions, you’ll not see people wandering around Home Park in Chelsea or Man Utd shirts. Most argyle fans are just that – They don’t have a “premiership team” like some other fans. Like the young Hull fan in this picture of Romain Larrieu saving a penalty last week – Why on earth would you go to a Hull City match wearing a luminous Chelsea shirt? I blame the parents!

So there you go – A brief update of why it’s good to be green. Now I’m off to stand in a field for the next couple of days, paying £5 for a burger and hoping the toilets aren’t too bad. I just hope my mobile has some reception there so I can get updates on the Ipswich game…

Come on you Greens!
