I agree with BLOGERCISE, it takes such a small amount of time and as long as they aren't spammy then it can't do any harm. They also have more value when attracting browsers to click on your website in the SERPs - a catchy title and description can drastically improve clicks.

I always say to people "why not put the meta tags in?". In the grand scheme of things it takes 2 mins and at that stage you already should have a good idea of what keywords you page is optimised for.

SEO isn't really a high level skill in the way that crafting quality code or chiselling out a fine sculpture is, imo. There are some rules to follow, which are pretty straight forward, you need to think about what words you want Google to rank you for. All you are doing is helping Google do its job, they even tell you how to do this themselves in their webmaster's guide.

As excellently said above, if you follow the easy to understand rules and get the right things in the right place then you can be sure you are doing all you can reasonably do. After that it is unfortunately down to link building and marketing.

I do think search engines are now much more sophisticated than ever before and will continue to get more advanced. I guess one day they will be "reading" articles and deciding which are best, but until then, why not just fill out the tags! :)

I'm not in anyway an SEO kinda guy but I'm going to put for yes as my answer. I can see microformatting and RDFa's becoming more and more common place in the next few years, especially with a break towards html5 and xhtml2.

Nice article today on RDFa's at alistapart, well worth a read - http://www.alistapart.com/articles/introduction-to-rdfa/
