Knocked another two titles off my Lovefilm wishlist on Saturday night with a couple of comedies – One a bit of an “oldie” (I know 1998 isn’t that old, but Adam Sandler looks so young in it!), and one more recent. Neither of them are particular classics, so I’ve lumped their reviews together.
We started with Talladega Nights, starring Will Ferrell, John C Reilly and Sasha Baron Cohen. I wasn’t a big fan of Will Ferrell until I watched Anchorman, and I think having watched this film, my original opinion may have been correct. I don’t see why Ferrell has to shout all his lines – It worked a treat as a sexist, egotistic 70’s newsreader, but it doesn’t translate too well to a redneck NASCAR driver
Part of the reason I didn’t enjoy the film as much may have been the fact that I watched “My Name is Earl” just an hour or so before this movie. Now that’s a perfect example of how to do Southern comedy – with Jason Lee as your main redneck hero (and no shouting either!), Jaime Pressley as the brash, money-grabbing, moral-less wife/ex-wife (plenty of shouting!) and Ethan Suplee as the dim-witted but good willed sidekick.
Talladega Nights did have some funny moments, but no big laughs and not the best story to be told. I’ve given it a Lovefilm rating of 2.5 (out of 5).
We then moved onto one of Adam Sandler’s early movies “The Waterboy”. It’s basic premise is that of a 31 year old “mommas boy” who is slightly retarted and not popular. He’s mocked by all his peers and not allowed a life of his own. Then a fellow failure, American Football coach Henry Winkler (who shall be forever known as The Fonz of course) spots his amazing talent for tackling when provoked/mocked. Think Forrest Gump meets The Hulk and chuck a football jersey on him…
I’m not too sure what this film is… It’s not quite a sports film, it’s not quite a romantic comedy, it’s not quite a slapstick comedy.. What it is, is all of these, and quite funny. Not really funny, but certainly enjoyable. I probably wouldn’t choose to watch it again, as it seems to be very similar to every other film Adam Sandler has done (although I was pleased to note he didn’t do his usual “angry jew” moment in this film where he yells at someone “heeeey! come oooon!”
I rated The Waterboy 3 (out of 5) on Lovefilm
I’m currently beta-testing a new facility at Lovefilm – Multiple wishlists. I currently have just 2 lists -”Films” and “TV programs”, as I have 60 films pending and around 10 TV series. Of my three disc selection, 2 will be from the films list and 1 from the TV list – This should mean I get through the movies quicker, rather than being stuck with TV series disc 1, 2 and 3.
PM440W Wireless Sound Rocker
The PM440W deluxe wireless sound rocker (or the Pyramat Sound Rocker S2000) brings you closer to the action whilst watching movies on DVD or Blueray – Feel every gunshot, car crash and soundtracks come into their own, whilst the bass kicks in – you’ll never want to watch a film on the sofa ever again!

the i1155 from iLuv is a revolution in portable entertainment. Its 8.4inch screen is one of the largest available in a multimedia DVD Player, and works fantastically well playing videos from your iPod via the integrated dock. User reviews are incredibly positive, and the price isn’t too bad either!
